This is a growing collection of questions I’ve been asked by clients. Don’t see your question? Ask it here.

General

  • A website is a vessel waiting to be filled
  • A website is a tool to encourage customers to buy your product or service
  • A website is a hub to store and share information about your business
  • A website is just the beginning

How about a simile? A website is like your business's resume. Every business needs one, and most potential customers will look at it. But no one gets hired unless they're applying for jobs, and a business won't get new customers just by having a website. Your new website is an important step, and your amazing business will do the rest!

The Website Creation Process

No sticking involved, just loving, careful placing of content. I design the structure of your site to best display your content, and I place your content as it fits best in the structure of the site, so the layout of your site and the styling of the content itself evolve together. The styling includes things like adding headers, adding new fonts, and adding bold to key phrases. I style your content so it is able to be read easily and understood clearly.

I will design the site layout based on your content and the design criteria we discussed, so the website you see should look pretty familiar to you. Clients are generally happy with the overall layout I choose, with small changes requested.

Logos

Logo design is separate project, and depending on your goals can be pretty complex. Here's an article about logo design and pricing. When I can, I'm happy to help out with the logo a little bit as a friendly favor, but not as an included part of the website. If you'd interested to purchasing a custom logo package, just ask.

Search Engine Optimization

In short, no. Mentioning your old website, keywords associated with it, or linking to your old website on your new website will not have a positive effect on your rankings, unless your old website was very similar in nature. For example, if your old website was for a tennis racket company, and your new website is for a tennis ball company, then mentioning your old website can be useful. But if your old website was for a successful yoga studio and your new website is for tea kettles, it would not be helpful.

Selling Online

In order for customers to be able to purchase items without ever leaving your site, it will cost an additional approximately $37 per month for PayPal Pro and the required server upgrades, and will take some extra time to set up. Doing so definitely creates a more pleasant experience for the customer, but since the alternative using PayPal standard is free, it’s a tough decision to make. This video talks about the differences between the PayPal Payments Pro and PayPal Payments Standard.

There are 2 main ways product images are displayed on Google.

1. Google Images searches and displays the images which match the search words you typed in. These images are pulled from the collection of all images on the web, whether in a website, someone's blog, a photo album, or an online store.

2. Google Shopping lets you search for products you can purchase online, and displays those product listings along with images of that product. This is the one we probably want to pay attention to, since it can help you sell jewelry on your website or Etsy, whereas on Google Images doesn't as much.

We can submit your product listings to Google automatically through your website. This will usually cost a little extra to set up, and products may take some time before they appear on Google.

Etsy purposefully makes it difficult to export/import/synchronize product listings because it wants to discourage "resellers", the type of people who sell in bulk on eBay, and keep it more homegrown/local/crafty. That means there are no built-in functions in Etsy that allow you do this. The only option right now would be a custom-coded solution, which might be possible depending on Etsy’s API.

Special Requests

Nice idea! I can see that working. Since they'd be pretty time-intensive to design, can we put this in my maybe pile for now? We can keep it in mind as we move forward.
